Homemade Big Macs are LIFE! Sounds dramatic, but honestly they are so darn good!
We recreated the classic at home tonight and they were the BOMB! So much like the original thanks to Coles special burger sauce, I served with homemade fries and everything was inhaled.
For the traditional 3 layers I sliced the buns twice, but for the kids I opted for traditional burger style.
Ingredients (makes 6 burgers) –
500g beef mince
Half a cup of Panko crumbs
6 burger buns
6 cups of thinly sliced iceberg lettuce
Half a brown onion finely diced o3 3 teaspoons of dried onion flakes.
6 cheddar cheese slices
Coles Special burger sauce
Salt and pepper
Tip – One of my dear friends Sharyn P. swears by using dried onion flakes and rehydrating them, she says they taste exactly like McDonalds onions and she’s a top cook so you can totally take her word for it.
In a large bowl combine the mince, egg and Panko and season well. Mix until well combined and form even patties ensuring they are super thin and will fit your buns.
If using onion flakes, rehydrate them in a small bowl with around a 1/4 cup of water. Leave for ten minutes and then drain the water and a huge thank you to my dear friend Sharyn for the hot tip on the onions as they are exactly the same as Maccas.
Cook your patties in a frypan on high heat and then to your bun layer lettuce, cheese, meat patty, sauce onion pickles and more sauce.
Absolutely scrumptious and a lot cheaper to make at home. I guesstimate it cost me around $13 to make 6 burgers at home as opposed to around $7 to buy one at Maccas.
