How to dye pasta and rice

Coloured pasta and rice provides so much fun for children and it’s very easy to do.
Every six months or so I have a big colouring fest and dye as much pasta and rice as I can for the kids. They use it for craft, sensory play and threading, and you probably have everything in your pantry to colour a batch for your little poppets.

You’ll need –
Rice or pasta but you can also dye most dried lentils and beans etc
Food colouring
White Vinegar
Zip lock bags
Baking paper

I add a few handfuls of pasta to a zip lock sandwich bag, add a few drops of food colouring and 1 teaspoon of vinegar. Seal the bag, give it a good shake and a gentle massage, leave for a few minutes to absorb the colour and then empty the pasta onto a sheet of baking paper and allow it to dry over night.
For the rice, follow the same method but leave it in the bag unsealed to dry.

I have a wet weather tub in my office to keep my children entertained, and we keep all our coloured pasta and rice here.
